I have written to the inventor for an illustra tion of this treadle, and for fuller information concerning it. The Patent Buttonhole Machine Company have just introduced an automatio machine called the " Unicorn," by means of which over 100 buttonholes are out and sewn in a single hour. The work produoed is described as being very good, " beautifully dose and regular on both the right and wrong side." The pearshaped hole, with one end rounded and the other square, is the only one made. No special thread or twist is needed for this machine, but the inventors mostly use Barbour's linen thread, Kerr's cotton, and Pearsall's twist, occasionally introducing a cord round the hole before sewing it. Four different cutters in brass or copper for various buttonholes are given with every machine, but any size can be made to order. One of these small apparatus ig inserted crosswise at the end of the curved handle, placed in front of the machine, to be used as a hammer and drive the sharpedged tool into the material through a narrow groove between two fingerlike clasps, used to hold firmly the stuff stretched on a small metal plate fixed on the steel disc, such as is seen on every sewing machine. Scarcely is the slit made by the cutter when the plate is swiftly slid under the needle, whioh is at onoe put into a jerking motion, to execute both the pieroing and knotting of the overoasting. When at the end of the first line, a most ingenious mechanism turns round the buttonhole, plate and all, somewhat in the style of shunting a railway carriage. By this movement the rounded end is sewn and the other edge pro ceeded with.
